Independent Movie: Barney's Version

 http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/sony/barneysversion/

Many of you may never hear about this indie flick.  It's another independent jewel that is rarely mentioned in the mainstream market.  Richard J. Lewis director and producer of the popular C.S.I. television series ends his long hiatus from film directing.   Lewis, brings to life the cinema adaption of Mordecai Richler's 1997 novel Barney's Version. The film, which spans three decades, chronicles a very relatable story of one man's personal journey.

Paul Giamatti (Duplicity)  plays a somewhat self-absorbed man who muddles through his days with bits of anger and disdain. He finds himself getting caught up with the wrong women until he meets the woman of his dreams on his wedding day and it's not the bride!

The film follows Barney Panofsky through a series of relationships which include his friends, family and lovers told through his point of view.  In the end, the depth of this man is truly revealed.  The acting is great and from what I've heard, without the film lasting three hours, the writers do a sound job with this novel's storyline.

Finally,  I should absolutely mention Dustin Hoffman, who plays Barney's father.  Mr. Hoffman looks comfortable and relaxed as Izzy Panofsky.  He is fantastic and brings into existence a very witty and charming man, who we'd all wish was in our family.  Well worth the money.

Main Actors:  Paul Giamatti (Duplicity) Rosamund Pike (Pride and Prejudice) Minnie Driver (Conviction) Dustin Hoffman(Little Fockers)

Reel Chick gives this film four reels=4

Just a note:   Barney's son is play by Dustin Hoffman's real son, Jake Hoffman.

Hall Pass- Barely Passes!

The Farrelly Brothers...what can I say?   The Directors of Me, Myself and Irene, Shallow Hal and Dumb and Dumber decided to walk off the ledge in what I'm labeling a "shock-com".  This a typical "men will be boys" themed movie. So, if you're not between the ages of 18-40 and male, you'll probably won't think Hall Pass was worth the time.

So, let me do my civic duty and say "Guys, this is NOT a Saturday night date movie"!!!  Your date could go seriously wrong watching this one.  Especially, if she catches you laughing at all during the movie (hint.hint.).

Yes, the movie can be funny at times but, I'm tired of movies thinking that "shock" is comedy.  It isn't; And like Jason Sudeikis character, its old school and worn out.  I really could have done without the scene of "big man vs wee man".   So do yourself a favor and save your money.  Unless, you like repeated references and imagery of  human feces, cunnilingus, and men behaving badly.

Main Actors in the movie:  Jason Sudeikis (SNL), Owen Wilson, Christina Applegate and Jenna Fischer (The Office).

Reel Chick gives this crazy shock-com two reels=2.

Don't say I didn't warn you!  And, don't be crazy and think its o.k. to take your kids to see this one; even if they are in High School, really.

Unknown! This one won't go unknown for long.

This review will be short.  Why, because if I say too much it will spoil the movie.   Here is the cast;  Liam Neeson ( The A-Team), January Jones (Mad Men), Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds).  I started my research and found that between the writers and director, it seems the cast has more experience in films.  So, you might think that could be a recipe for disaster.  You know, great acting but, the movie sucked.  Well,  I have to hand it to the writers for pulling off a really good storyline.  Most of the time you can figure out the plot or twist before the movie ends, this one left the surprise til the end.   So much so that I was accusing the movie as being slightly far fitched, but later it all made sense.   Good one!   All I'm going to say about the plot is the character played by Liam Neeson, Dr. Martin Harris, wakes up from a coma and it takes off from there.  You've gotta watch this movie for it make sense.  You won't even figure it out by watching the trailer.  This movie is rated pg-13 but, I caution you.  I'm a little old school and it has violence and a highly suggestive shower scene,  so I'm not sure if I adventure taking my 13 year old kid to this one.  But,  as my husband pointed out its nothing they haven't seen already on t.v. or video games.

ReelChick gives this movie 4 reels for having a good storyline and good acting.  Worth seeing.

Reels=4  (pretty good)

Just Go With It! Sure!

http://www.justgowithit-movie.com/

Here comes another Happy Madison Production! But, before you rush out expecting to see the theatrics that are typically found in many of its beloved movies, this is not the case.   Yes, the gang is all back and making their mark from the Director, to your favorite SNL stars and of course, our wacky HMP regulars that I now just call the "guys".   This movie starts out with your classic Adam Sandleresque comedy, but quickly shifts direction with its addition of Jennifer Aniston.  Directed by Denise Dugan, a frequent contributor in Adam Sandler's movies does a good job with this romcom! It's corky, a little over the top, but balanced enough to keep your interest and get some sincere laughs.

A lot of times, I feel cheated when movie makers try too hard and force comedy to get laughs and unfortunately, in the last Adam Sandler movie they did just that in Grown-Ups, also directed by Dennis Dugan.  So, I got worried during the first five to ten minutes of the movie and thought, uh-oh, repeat comedy foul but, honestly as soon as it switched directions and focused on Jen and Adam it made all the difference.   I'm not a big Jennifer Aniston fan and didn't quite know how well she would fit as a leading lady for Mr. Sandler, but it worked.  She brought balance to the movie and good for the HPM gang cause this movie could have gone terribly wrong.

So, the premise behind Just Go With It is finding the "one".  Adam Sandler plays a slightly more mature role as an established Los Angeles, commitment phobic, Plastic Surgeon.  One night, after a sandy beach romp he feels he may have found the girl of his dreams.  The girl,  a just out of college, twenty-three year old math teacher is played by Brooklyn Decker. When she finds out Adam is married well, all hell breaks loose and a web of lies ensue which traps his long time office assistant, played by Jennifer Aniston, into helping him.

I don't want to give away too much of the movie so, let's just say after the "staple" dressing room scene and slow mos you tend to see, the movie migrates to Hawaii and takes off from there.   A few surprise showbizers find their way into the storyline.  Like Nicole Kidman and Dave Matthews.  Tip:  Watch out for the coconut scene!  Did that really happen?!?!  lol, awkward. Nick Swardon, you may not recognize his name, but you will recognize him.  Especially, after this supporting role as Dolf Lundgren a German Sheep Herder, too much!!  The kids roles are typical, annoying and cute all at the same time. Finally, since the movie was filmed in Hawaii this is a perfect reason to take your clothes off, right?  So, if you get to thinking that your watching part of the swim suit addition of Sports Illustrated, well you wouldn't be too far off.  Brooklyn Decker was the host of the Sports Illustrated made for t.v. movie and she's my new skinime!!! :). But, I have to hand it to Ms. Aniston for keeping it real.  She rocks her forty something body on screen and sure to make someone jealous!  You go girl!   So, guys there is plenty of eye candy in this movie and mixed with Adam Sandler humor, it's not too bad. This is a cute date movie or matinee. Oh and since Valentine's is coming up, this might be a good choice for you guys.  But, remember take your date to the movie first so you will have something to talk about over dinner, o.k.?!   Any hoo, go see it!

Reelchick  gives it three reels.   This is not a rush to go see movie,  but you'll be surprisingly entertained.

And the Oscar Goes To......

Do you want to watch the Oscars, but really don't have the time to sit through 5 hours of  "scatterories" like best editing, best sound mixing!  I'm sure these nominees deserve there time in the spot light, but while they get to work at their dream job and party til the sun comes up, the rest of us have to get up, make breakfast, get the kids ready, and deal with the boss.   So,  for all of you,  the Nominees are:  (The ones we really care about)

Best Picture:

Black Swan
Inception
The Fighter
The King's Speech
Winter's Bone
Toy Story 3
127 Hours
The Social Network
True Grit
The Kid's are all right

And the Oscar Goes To....?!  It's a toss-up the Oscars, in my opinion, are known for throwing a wrench just when you think you have it figured out.

My pickInception.   Who I think will actually win:  The Social Network.   I have to say 99% of these pictures deserve their nomination.

Best Actor:

Javier Bardem
Jeff Bridges
Jesse Eisenberg
Colin Firth
James Franco

And the Oscar Goes To...  I have to admit this is a tough category to be in for these actors.  All of them put on a stiller performance.  To me it comes down to how difficult of a role was it  and did he make me believe it!

My Pick:   Colin Firth.   Who I think will actually win:    Javier Bardem (already won the Spanish version of the Oscar, the Goya, for the same role)

Best Actress:

Natalie Portman
Nicole Kidman
Annette Benning
Jennifer Lawerence
Michelle Williams

And the Oscar Goes To....I have a feeling out of all the nominations this one will be hands down  Natalie Portman,  but she has some stiff competition with Michelle Williams.  I wouldn't at all be surprised if Michelle walked away with the Oscar,  remember this award show can be unperdictable.

My Pick:   Natalie Portman.   Who I think will actually win:     Natalie Portman

Best Actor Supporting Role:

Christian Bale
John Hawkes
Jeremy Renner
Mark Ruffalo
Geoffrey Rush

And the Oscar Goes To.... This one is tricky! Most of the nominees are newcomers to the Oscar nods.  Then you have Geoffrey Rush a seasoned actor with 2 previous nominations and a leading role win for Shine in 1996.  Is he due for his first win in a supporting role?  This one will be hard to call.

My Pick:  Christian Bale.   Who I think will win:   I'm going to take the sucker way out and say "coin toss" between Christian Bale and Geoffrey Rush.

Best Actress Supporting Role:

Amy Adams
Helena Bonham Carter
Melissa Leo
Hailee Steinfeld
Jackie Weaver

And the Oscar Goes To....So you have veterans vs newcomers in this category. Amy Adams has been nominated twice before in a supporting role. Helena Bonham Carter and Melissa Leo have been nominated once before in the lead role category.  Then there are the newcomers.  If memory serves me right their have been a number of child actors nominated in a supporting role.  Anna Paquin at age 11 won an Oscar in her first feature film (The Piano).   So will Hailee Steinfeld be the winner this time?  My guess  is she has one heck of a chance.

My Pick:   Hailee Steinfeld    Who I think will win:   Amy Adams

So, there you go the low down on the Golden Boy nominations you want to know about.  Remember February 27, 2011 the Oscars air from before dawn and into the next week.  Just kidding, but they really do need to cut it down.

Adios

Sanctum 3D- Someone give me a rope I'm outta here!

So,  you might think from the 3D trailer and the fact that James Cameron's name is associated with this film that it just might be worth seeing?  Well......before I give you my take, let's set this up for you.  First, about the actors, you might get the sneaky sensation, like I did, that some of them look fimiliar. So, of course after the movie I had to find out and voila thanks to IMDb my mind could stop wondering.   The first aw moment came with actor Ioan Gruffudd better known as Mr. Fantastic in the obvious titled movie Fantastic Four.  It was hard to pin point if he was the lead in this movie, but Mr. Fantastic does show up first on the scene.  He plays a kinda know it all billionaire and adventure seeker named Carl.  Carl's  love interest is Victoria, played by Alice Pakinson.  As an actor,  she is relatively unknown. Next to appear is "Josh" a  rebellious teenage kid played by Rhys Wakefied a young, Australian actor.  This seems to be his American audience debut movie.  Josh's  father "Frank"  played by Richard Roxburg, is a unfeeling hard ass who supposedly loves cave exploration and diving, but he seems to pretty put out with his "occupation" or just the people around him during the entire movie.   Richard Roxburg was my second aw moment,  also Australian actor,  you might remember him from Misson Impossible II as Hugh Stamp.

So, the movie starts and I'm optimistic, but then again,  I have to say the title did give me second thoughts.  The movie, inspired by true events, filmed in Australia and of course executive produced by James Cameron had all the makings of a decent Action/Adventure.  Unfortunately, it fell short in many areas.   Director, Alister Grierson had the right idea, but just couldn't put it all together.  You could really tell the strength and weakness of this movie and if you are a rock climber, base jumper, diver or cave explorer you might get offended, cause even I, a laymen, could tell some of the stuff the actors did was far fetched.

The movie centered around a massive exploration of an underground cave, of course, something goes wrong and people get trapped and the clock is ticking to find a way out.  The acting seemed a bit cheesy and B movie-ish.   The storyline was weak and the words Sh!t and Fu@k were used a little too much.  Too many characters not enough development, makes you wonder what was left on the cutting room floor.  Side note: What was the deal with the tribesman?  Anyway, you can tell where James Cameron had a hand in this movie.  He does know his water!   The underwater scenes were spectacular. I have to admit that 3D movies seem to be  overrated and to me it does not seem much different then a 2D version, but there were some moments in this movie that really made you go wow.  Especially, the first underwater dive.  You almost felt as if you going down too.   The cinematography above ground and under were beautiful and really stood out in the movie.  If it weren't for that this Action/Adventure would be a big money loser.  It's estimated to gross over 30 million dollars; if it does, the only reason I think people would go to see it is because James Cameron's name is attached to it.   So,  don't waste your money or your time.  Save it!   This movie would have been better suited as a documentary.
